Born and raised in Pamlico County, Dr. and Mr. Lee returned home after successful professional careers, intent ongoing back to the community that raised them. Dr. Lee established the county’s first pediatric practice and quickly recognized significant barriers affecting local children and families.

Poverty, geographic isolation, limited transportation, lack of accessible healthcare and mental health services, and family instability created challenges that often prevented children from achieving academic, social, and emotional success.

Dr. Lee saw firsthand how adverse childhood experiences, developmental delays, and untreated behavioral and mental health needs could affect a child’s future. She and Mr. Lee believed meaningful, long-term change needed a holistic approach; it required building a network of resources to support children and their families.

HeartWorks was established to create a network focused on educational opportunities, nurturing relationships, and providing accessible services. It was founded on the belief that communities thrive when they serve as “the shelter of each other.”

HeartWorks’ first major initiative was StillWaters Counseling. Created in 2002, it has provided school-based counseling services for children who otherwise face significant barriers to accessing care.

By bringing licensed therapeutic services directly into schools and community settings, HeartWorks reduced transportation obstacles and increased access to mental health support.

In 2004, HeartWorks expanded its work by introducing afterschool programming designed to support students academically, socially, and emotionally.

As these programs grew, the organization purchased and renovated a former car dealership in Bayboro in 2006. It became the HeartWorks Safe Harbor Youth Center, the central hub for programming and community outreach efforts.

Through 21st Century Community Learning Center programs, HeartWorks continues expanding its services for Pamlico County and surrounding areas. They provide academic support, enrichment activities, life skills development, recreation, and family engagement opportunities for hundreds of students annually.

During the last 20 plus years, HeartWorks has evolved into a comprehensive community organization providing for the ongoing needs of its children and families. The success  of the organization reflects not only the vision and generosity of Dr. Sue and Rod Lee, but also the dedication of staff, volunteers, board members, donors, and community partners who continue to advance HeartWorks’ mission.

What began as a local response to unmet needs has grown into a lasting community resource that continues to improve lives and strengthen families throughout Eastern North Carolina.
